Renowned economic analyst, Prof Sunday Oriaku Ezeh has faulted the Federal Government of Nigeria, on it’s decision to exclude any of the Airports in the south East geo political zone from the list of Airports designated ‘ special economic zones’ for the purpose of extending special economic attention to them
It would be recalled that recently the Federal Government designated four Airports in the country namely Port Harcourt International Airport, Murtalla Mohammed Airport Lagos, Aminu Kano International Airport Kano and Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Abuja, as ‘ special economic zones’
According to the university don, from Ebonyi state, the exclusion of the Airports in the south East geo political zone is quite unfair
He believed that the South East zone like other zones in the country has some major economic potencials that can help the economic growth of the country
He noted with emphasis that the South East zone is very viable to have cargo Airports from where goods can be lifted out of the country to any destination
Prof Eze however saw the exclusion of Airports from the South East as part of the long expressed opinion of marginalization of the region by the federal government pointing out that all the Airports in the south East zone qualify for such Designation if only the federal government would help upgrade the Airports
Expressing his opinion on this to our correspondent in Owerri Imo state capital, the professor said ” look at the Akanu Ibiam Airport Enugu which has been long in establishment, look at Sam Mbakwe Airport Owerri, are these Airports not qualified to be upgraded more to be of international standard
He said ,” like the Sam Mbakwe international cargo airport, the federal government has the resources to complete the ongoing work there which is nearing completion
Also reacting, an international businessman, Chief Nwadigo Eziefula believed that the environment of the South East zone is vested with economic potencials which should warrant designation of the two Airports as special economic zones’
He urged the federal government to review it’s decision on economic issues relating to the zone and always carry the zone along .
